People move for all sorts of reasons and downsizing is one key motivator. Downsizing means moving to a cheaper and usually smaller property. Generally, people downsize once offspring have left home although this is not always the case with some making the move when children go off to university, or simply to pay off debts earlier.

For some, downsizing is challenging; others find it truly liberating, both financially and in terms of having less property and garden maintenance. For many it also facilitates a change in lifestyle and sometimes provides completely new surroundings – from a remote location to within walking distance of shops, for example.

Possibly one of the hardest aspects of downsizing is reducing the number of amassed belongings. Successful downsizers give themselves time to start decluttering before going on the market, even if it’s just establishing a plan of action. Perhaps family heirlooms are handed on to the younger generation (many of whom are upsizing!) Some also reap the benefits of selling items online, or at auction. Others find it rewarding to make the process a way of donating to charity. There is no right answer, only what feels most positive and pragmatic.

Before even thinking about putting the house on the market, it is important to feel ready and as well adjusted to the idea as possible. People sometimes find it helps to plan what space they need. It’s also worth remembering that it may take time to ‘get your eye in’ when looking at downsize properties as you will automatically be accustomed to more space.

If the aim is for a final move then it’s also important to choose somewhere practical that will suit you for many years to come.
